Moldova’s Education and Research Ministry on Tuesday condemned a document sent to all teachers in Moldova’s autonomous Gagauzia region telling them to march with their students on February 2 to commemorate an illegal referendum held in 2014 – in which voters backed the separation of Gagauzia from Moldova, it the latter ever loses its sovereignty.

In the 2014 referendum, about 98 per cent of participants voted for Gagauzia to declare independence in case Moldova loses its sovereignty, and join the Russian-led customs union, the CIS. Moldova declared the referendum illegal.

[The vote reflected fears in Gagauzia that Moldova’s EU integration might result in its eventual reunification with Romania, of which it was part between the two world wars].

The ministry called on the region’s authorities “not to disrupt the educational process,” saying: “[It] will notify the legal authorities regarding the actions of decision-makers within the General Directorate of Education in Gagauzia concerning the initiative to involve students in participating in the event of February 2, 2024.”

Under the Education Code of Moldova, it said, teachers may not use or admit chauvinistic, nationalist, political, religious, or militaristic propaganda in education and also may not to involve pupils and students in political actions such as rallies, demonstrations, or picketing.

Another 88 principals and deputy principals from 44 educational institutions in the Gagauz region were meanwhile invited to join a forum on “Expressing the Will of the People of Gagauzia: achievements, perspectives and Experience of 2014,”  to be held in Comrat, the largest city in Gagauzia.

The Gagauz are an Orthodox Christian ethnic Turkish community numbering around 150,000. They are Moldova’s second largest ethnic minority, after Ukrainians, and mostly pro-Russian in their politics, which puts them at odds with the country’s pro-Western government.

The new governor of Gagauzia, Evghenia Gutul, is a member of the party of Ilan Shor, the fugitive pro-Russian oligarch who opposes the government in Chisinau and is hiding in Israel. The authorities accused Shor of trying, with the help of Russia, to destabilise Moldova after he was sentenced to prison in April 2023 over the so-called “Grand Theft” of a billion US dollars from three private banks between 2012 and 2014.

On January 13, in a press conference in Romania, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, said Russia would resume its attempts to destabilise Moldova in 2024 ahead of presidential elections, and a referendum on joining the European Union, due in autumn 2024.
